Mission
Kwa Wazee pays monthly pensions to older adults living in poverty and provides financial support to grandparents who care for their grandchildren. The organization also establishes neighborhood groups. It promotes physical well-being as well as human and social capital. In this way, it alleviates poverty and combats injustice.
Vision
Older adults in Kagera live with dignity. They have sufficient resources for food, shelter, and health care. They enjoy social recognition and self-respect. Their grandchildren grow up safe and strong.
The Team in Nshamba
The nine-member team in Nshamba has been coordinated for 16 years by Executive Director Lydiah P. Lugazia, who holds a master’s degree in social development. It consists of six women and three men with diverse professional backgrounds and educational qualifications. Several of them have been working for Kwa Wazee since its founding. Among the team members are some who, as orphans, grew up with grandparents who once received a pension from Kwa Wazee. The team is supported by local volunteers as well as members of senior citizens’ councils and neighborhood group committees. The organization’s seven-member board in Nshamba is composed of local professionals and community representatives.
The Kwa Wazee Association
The association, based in Basel, is responsible for securing the funding agreed upon with the team in Tanzania. It also provides advice on organizational development issues.
