Research is an essential part of the pilot programme

Evaluations or studies are an important source of reflecting the own programme and provide evidence for improvements.

Relatively little research exists in Subsaharan Africa which is focussed on older people - especially poor or ultra poor older people living in remote rural settings. There is also very little evidence on cash transfers to this particular group of people.

Kwa Wazee is therefore ambitious to to feed its experience and the lessons learned into the network of HelpAge International and - in a national context - into the debate on social pensions in Tanzania.

A first comprehensive study focussed on the impact of pensions on the lives of older people and grandchildren and also included an overview on national and regional policies for social protection for older people in Tanzania.
